Finally, an editorial I agree with regarding those Dove Ads....
Yeah, I know that this ship has sailed. But I'm a good swimmer!
Sorry, Dove: Bigger Isn't Necessarily Better
By Robin Givhan
Washington Post Staff Writer
Givhan has said what I have been thinking about people who pound me over the head with the "real women" epithet.
basically, I believe one doesn't have to be overweight to be a 'real woman' - you just need the right chromosomes.

How can you be such a big hater?
I mean honestly...

I completely agree. I'm a skinny mess of boniness, I can't just grow boobies, you know! Women are women are women. We certainly don't need to develop heart disease and diabetes to prove it.

Well, as someone who is fighting her family's genes to collect weight (as if we were all still starving during winter in the Old Country) and as someone who has dealt with severe body image issues (I think I would look pretty good if I had a different head), I have to admit that I appreciate any attempt to diversify the images of women presented in the media. However, no one seems to understand that the Dove ads, even though they feature "larger" (meaning size 6) models, are *still* playing on women's fears of imperfection in order to sell a product, the product in this case being skin-firming lotion, or whatever the hell it is. In other words, "Here are eight women who may look a little more like you, but at least they don't have cellulite like you do! Buy our product!"

I think that the campaign is a good effort to make some women realize that they are just fine the way that they are. i don't think that the ads should be worshipped or told that they are wrong because for some women, they are the boost that they genuinely need to get through the day. believe me, i know from personal experience.
