from the "too much information" category...

I don't think it'll shock anyone to hear that I'm on the pill. yes. that one. have been for years.

you may already know that certain antibiotics interfere with the effectiveness of the pill, right?

well, recently, a married girlfriend and I were talking and we realized that both of us were on the same antibiotic for a skin thing.

it seems that while MY doctor was all "dude, while you're on this, be sure to be extra cautious with the boy-germs, because it totally interferes with the pill",

HER doctor was all "well, you know the pill is, what, 99.7 percent effective? it's now 93 percent effective - you decide what you wanna do with that."

Now, any percentage point closer to pregnancy is too close for comfort, in my book, but why does the married lady get "oh, you crazy kid, you do what you want!" and the single gal gets "if I were you, I'd be using three condoms and a layer of teflon?"

I'd be furious, if I weren't so busy looking into budget teflon options....

Because my doctor knows that my husband had The Big V years ago.

And because I've only been to him twice, so he doesn't yet realize that I should not, under any circumstances, reproduce.

Honestly, what I think it is, is that when gynecologists see married women, they see obstetrics $$$. I'm married, and every time I just want a damn pap smear, my gyno is like, "Are you planning to get pregnant soon? Are you sure? Because if you want to get pregant, we'll put you on supplements...excuse me, did you say that you wanted to get pregnant? Oh..."

Your study lacks control. If the SAME doctor told the married and single girl two different things, you might be on to a conspiracy. What you have now is two different doctors presenting information in two different ways.

But what do I know? I'm jsut a boy.

good points, everyone -

married lady : lucky you, with an infertile man. I hope that someday I can retrofit my darling dear with one of those detachments. but in the mean time, I'll love, honor, and obey the pill and it's limitations..

karen: ha! good point on the ob/gyn/money link. I hadn't thought of it that way!

and dear oblivion - I swear, I wasn't really considering it a study...more of an interesting set of circumstances that totally yanked my chain out of the gears for a bit, you know? you're right, it's two different ladies, two different doctors, and two different lady-circumstances....but still, the coincidence that we'd both be on the pill, both be on the antibiotic, and both be desperately child-free by choice . . . it was too good to not blog about, don't you think?

(grin)
