you can take it from me....

in the Sun-Times today:

Unneeded organs: Don't act up, spleen, or you're GONE!

I've already had the spleen, tonsils/adenoids, and gallbladder out - I'm thinking the appendix is go next, then the thyroid (women in the great lakes area tend to pop those out at an alarming rate)...not sure how I feel about getting rid of the paired organs, tho. don't want the one lung pining away for the other one....

Yes paired organs bring to mind scary 2-for-1 deals - "Take one kidney and we'll throw in a spleen, gallbladder or that techy prostate for free!" Though working in the health sciences I would query anyone who said taking out your spleen was a good idea. If damaged - yes/maybe but you don't fuck with anything that is so important to your auto-immune system. Lots of potential bad stuff later in life. Oh you took it out? *cough* Um. Ignore everything I said. You obviously had a good reason.

i miss my adenoids...

yeah, I didn't have much of a choice on the splenectomy, Kartar - I was a five year old girl with a genetic spherocytosis. which is why the other organs eventually had to go, too.

granted, I can't get over colds for the life of me.

and I, too, miss my adenoids, {e}

Spherocytosis. Nasty and remarkably unknown for such a common genetic disorder - especially amongst those of us with Northern European genetic backgrounds. No fun for little Heather I imagine.

eh, I've never known a life without:

colds that last three weeks.

hospital stays for otherwise tame-sounding illnesses.

a 18-to-24-inch waist (yeah, getting a bit chubby in my old age) and a kick-ass belly scar.

so, SC ain't that nasty, actually. just a pain when one doesn't have insurance.

A 24" waist is chubby like my 30" waist is a beer gut. Actually it was a bit traumatic stepping up from 29" ten years go.

oh, organs gone AWOL? I miss my appendix . . . it sploded when I was eleven and I too have a bodacious belly scar . . . I have amazing tips for a fabulous immune system (I never get sick anymore - really - twice in seven years . . . ) Drop me an email if you want me to pass them on to you and your spleenlessnes . . . :)
