comix rock.
finally working my way through neil gaiman's sandman series.
they have 'em at my local (and otherwise mediocre) public library -
it's so weird, to see graphic novels in a staid stack next to the "wacky" garfields in the dewey decimal system...
also weird - having fellow passengers on the train act like reading comic books is somehow more low-brow than reading glossy women's magazines. This morning as I'm looking at a page filled with zombies, a weirdly-coiffed co-passenger looked over from cosmo, sniffed, and asked: "do you have kids?"
it took all of my train-riding courtesy training to not look at her mag, sniff, and ask "do you have crabs?"
don't get me wrong, I'm all about magazines - I subscribe (and contribute) to quite a few. but if you get all up in my face on the judgment wagon, I'm leaping right back up in yours, eh?
so, that said, I'm finally able to appreciate graphic novels. any suggestions on the next series to tackle?

I LOVED the Sandman series, when I was collecting comics, that was my favorite title. The various mini-series like Death were really good too. Aside from that, The Crow original mini-series by J. O'Barr was my other favorite (which they later made into a decent film but paled in comparison to the comic).

Heather - the Preacher series by Garth Ennis & Steve Dillon. You'll love them.

Congrats on finally reading the Sandman. That's easily some of the best fiction of the nineties. Gaiman's blending of ancient pantheons, sorcery/witchcraft, and judeo-christian mythos with contemporary themes is pretty spectacular.
That said, I second Preacher, and also recommend the Books of Magic series. (If only for their better-than-Harry-Potter's-illustrations covers. And anything that Chris Clairemont wrote for the X-men (especially the Dark Phoenix Saga).
Also, one-offs: Mr. Punch, Black Orchid, Arkham Asylum (Batman), and (I think it's called) the Mystery Play.
Happy reading!

Cerebus: Church & State, High Society, Melmoth (if you like Oscar Wilde), Jaka's Story. Avoid the later stuff unless you want to wade through the author's misogyny.
Watchmen.
Cages, and just about anything else done by Dave McKean (who did many of the Sandman covers).

You should have asked her if she had crabs. That'll teach her to mind her own business.
