About A Foreign Boy

okay, I can't put my finger on it, but it's just...well...british films aren't really 'foreign' films, are they? I mean, they are in another country, they call 'soccer' 'football' and all that, but when I went to see "about a boy", the only thing I saw that was 'foreign' about the film was that single mothers were able to attend support group meetings at 2pm on friday (no bosses to keep track of their hours, I guess) and that door knobs were up about chest level on all the front doors.

no, the movie wasn't boring, but it wasn't so complex that you couldn't notice these nitpicky little things without missing major plot points. my biggest beef with the movie: when hugh grant's character was giving this little kid a 'cool' makeover, he started with his shoes. I, personally, would have gone for the hair - who the hell wears a bowl cut, these days?

Shar0n 0sb0rne, at your service.

yeah, I did the dorky thing of taking the 'which 0sb0urne are you' test. do you think that anyone who can tie their own shoes would end up as anything other than Sharon? and no, I don't sing to my dogs. I do sing to John, if he's good. He's not a dog, but he's attentive, and wears that cute little bow in his hair...

New Beginnings

well, let's see. watched the X files finale this weekend. it sucked. really, really sucked. honestly - it was good to see the past players, surprising to see scully and mulder make out (what? you didn't see that coming a mile away?)...but it wasn't even a passable mythology episode, let alone a satisfying ending to a 9-year show.

I also got a haircut. 3-5 inches off, depending on what side you're on. as I've had long, long, long hair for a zillion years now, it's shocking. not as shocking as the neat-o giraffication ms. jocelyn went through recently, but it's just ...er...something to get used to.

ah well. new beginnings.

I *am* punk rock. kinda. in my mind.

I know, I know. I was going to get the whole site redesigned and converted and all that moveabletype nonsense sorted out over the weekend. instead, we had a houseguest, baked bagels for mother's day, watched Trainspotting, and cleaned house, in no particular order.

Liked trainspotting, btw. saw how it influenced other flicks and wished i had seen it earlier, despite my friends' recommendations to avoid. . .

Just because I'm cute and don't have any tats or piercings, people tend to assume I'm more inclined towards normality. away from anarchist and more towards conformist. that I couldn't possibly enjoy something a little bit punk rock.

not that I have anything to prove, but, dag. well, if I do have anything to prove, it'll have to wait 'til the weekend - I'm busy!

A real corpse.

I saw a corpse yesterday. of a person. And a saw a whole bunch of people I didn't expect to see, and it was wistfully marvellous. it's so strange - you go to a funeral, and if you're not the family of the dead guy, you feel all...er...guilty or something about feeling joy in seeing other people you know there? guilty about smiling, or something?

That Horrible Cell Phone Girl

Andrew's post from yesterday reminds me of the woman I saw on the train platform a few days ago. She was talking on her phone, semi-quietly, and as we step into the train car, she says "okay, I gotta go - I'm getting on the train now, and I don't want to be 'that horrible cell-phone girl. bye!"

i wanted to applaud. we just caught each other's eyes and smiled.

right, like I really installed MT a year ago and didn't use it.

oh yeah, and I forgot to mention. I'm taking a look at this thing the kids are all using these days - moveable type? anyway, we'll see if I can get things up and running by next week. comments and archives for everyone! (and yes in my world, everyone = more than 5 people)

more on public access. kinda.

I really wonder how I get by some days. I googled 'RFDtv' in all the ways I was meticulously schooled in 'research student hell but I never thought to just type "www.rftdv.com" in my web browser. sheesh.

so, now that I got my brain back, I bring to you, video horse productions!

and yes, I'm still looking to tape the purple speedo yoga guys for you-all. no need to thank me.

Public Access TV is awesome.

You may remember when Phin posted the bit about the purple speedo yoga guys on public access tv? I just found something more terrifying. There is a network dedicated to rural living - RFDtv. You got 4-H, you got weather, you got farm reports....and you have horses and riders doing interpretive dance to christian rock. No, seriously. people in costume, riding costumed horses, in an interpretive-dance fashion. Flailing their arms to 'g*d is an awesome g*d' or some such. John and I watched in horror for 3 rounds of dance, our mouths gaping in disbelief. Those poor, poor horses. Those creepy, creepy riders.
